Officers make quick arrest after mugging

An armed response officer arrested a 24-year-old man moments after woman was mugged in Harfield Village last Thursday morning.

Claremont police spokesperson Colonel Jairaj Rameshwaranath said a mugger took the woman’s handbag and cellphone in Roseville Road.

Jade Hanning, of Fidelity ADT, said one of their officers had seen a suspect running in the road. The man appeared to be carrying a gun, he said.

“Our officer pursued the running suspect with his vehicle. When the suspect saw our officer, he stopped and pointed the firearm at him to which our officer responded by drawing his service firearm and firing one shot towards the suspect,” said Mr Hanning.

The suspect was apprehended on a Ravensworth Road property. He was found with a gas pistol as well as the stolen cellphone and handbag.
