It’s time that rapists (not victims) get shamed on a broad societal level.
Rapists should be wholly ostracised by society and labelled with lifelong negative stigmas. Violent culture among certain men should be replaced by a collective effort to shame men who rape to the degree that it deters them from doing it.
The City of Cape Town ran an anti-drug campaign that displayed the faces of public figures on billboards with the simple line, “I have a drug problem”, to demonstrate that drug abuse is a societal problem. Let’s start displaying the faces of rapists on bill boards around South Africa’s cities, suburbs, university campuses, informal settlements and towns with the simple line: “I am a rapist – I am cursed”.
