Musical brings life to old District Six culture

The excitement of Cape Town’s annual coon carnival will be brought to life in Carnival a la District Six, at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone on Thursday December 29 and Friday December 30, at 8pm.

Directed by Jayson King, the show will take the audience back in time to the singing sessions on street corners in old District Six, where performers used the pavement as their stage and the streetlight as their spotlight.

The cast includes Mr King, Sumaya Hendricks, Ruth Knight, Dennis Maart, Tony Butler, Zayboodien Abrahams, Rashaad Adams, Mogammat Meniers, Anastacia Khan, Jacques Hector Smith and Zurayda Abrahams.

They will take a poignant look at where the sound of the carnival started and travels through to the present day with the colourful costumes, ghoema drums, comedy and exciting songs.

In the second act, they will pay tribute to international singing icons such as Tina Turner, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, The Supremes, Manhattans and Gloria Gaynor.
