The Cape Heritage Museum has received the Heritage Education award in the National Heritage Council Golden Shield Awards, held at the Artscape earlier this month.
Other Golden Shield Award categories included awards for Lifetime Achiever, National Living Treasure, Ubuntu Honour, Preferred Heritage Destination, Voice of Heritage and Young Heritage Activist.
The Cape Heritage Museum is a non-profit organisation that was formed in 2020 and is based at the Castle of Good Hope. Its curator is Igshaan Higgens, of Walmer Estate.
Mr Higgens said the museum’s grand vision was to stand as a distinguished cultural institution “dedicated to showcasing, enlightening, and preserving the arts, history, politics, culture, and rich heritage of Cape Muslims, their ancestors who experienced slavery, and the indigenous communities that contributed to South Africa and the wider world”.
He said the museum was honoured to receive the award “in recognition of our commitment to heritage education”.
National Heritage Council CEO Dr Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni said it was important to acknowledge the museum for its role in the management of cultural heritage.
