What began as an ordinary day, turned into a day of drama, with a high-speed chase along Liesbeek Parkway.
This happened after Woodstock police responded to a call about a business robbery taking place at a butchery in Foundry Road, Salt River, on Friday November 24.
An officer in the area spotted a white VW Golf matching the description of the vehicle involved, but as police approached, the driver sped off.
A high-speed chase unfolded, with several shots being fired at the police vehicle during the chase. The Flying Squad also got involved and helped police stop the vehicle at the Goodwood bridge on the N7. The men in the vehicle continued to fire shots at the police who returned fire and injured one of the men in the head.
The injured man received medical attention on the scene and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Police arrested three men, aged between 28 and 35, who were in possession of a 9mm pistol and a .38 special revolver. They also recovered an undisclosed amount of cash, which had been taken during the robbery.
The men are facing charges related to armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed fire-arms and ammunition.
