Magnet Theatre in Observatory hosted a double launch last week with a book by local actress, director and teacher Jennie Reznek of a companion work about her play, “I Turned Away And She Was Gone” and a fund drive for two-year full time training and job creation programme for youth.
Publisher Colleen Higgs said Ms Reznek submitted the book under poetry. “We loved it, this play script, poetry, it falls under both,” she said inside the theatre prior to two segments from the the one woman play.
The set of this master work is simple – a table with flowers, a chair and a bathtub. Water plays a big part of the play, from a bubble in the beginning to hand-washing hand puppetry. Time spans three incarnations of women: a mother, a daughter and an old crone. It is sometimes haunting as Ms Reznek hops from the past, present and future. The story draws from the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone, straddling a life from birth to its conclusion, exploring the journey from girlhood to mother and finally a crone while exploring the bonds that connect each.
After the performance poet and performer Koleka Putuma discussed the play with Ms Reznek who then signed copies of the books.
