After moving back home during the Covid-19 pandemic to concentrate on her music full-time, a Rondebosch singer/songwriter says she is ready to take her music to new audiences, stages and areas of expression.
Indie soul artist Luh’ra recently released a seven-track album, Nice, a follow-up to her 2019 debut EP Luh’ra Luv. The album includes a mix of jazz, silky R&B and smooth beats.
Luh’ra says she found herself performing for audiences around the world as the music industry adjusted to live streaming after the pandemic hit in 2020.
“I generally just write my songs on my guitar, but this time I really thought a lot about how I want to grow each song in terms of the arrangement and the instrumentation. It was such a pleasure for me to get to work with the amazing musicians who appear on Nice, to really bring out the best in each song.
“The songs on the record run from a point of heartbreak to realising you can be the one to love yourself. It’s also about finding a very deep respect for friendship and honouring genuine connections.”
After completing an architectural degree at UCT, she worked in different creative industries but mid-pandemic took the decision to move back home and focus solely on her music.
“It’s not always easy, but this path has always been evident,” she says. “While at university, I was staging live events and collaborating with other artists across different mediums. I have now taken a decision to focus solely on my music – on writing, on recording and on performing.
“I’m really excited about what lies ahead and connecting with people in a deeper, more intense way.”
