A local Indie pop band, who will be the opening act for The Cure at the Rock on the Lawns festival, say the day promises to be one for the books.
The band, Opposite the Other, will share the stage with artists such as Fokofpolisiekar, Ard Matthews, Karen Zoid, Zebra and Giraffe, Southern Wild and Hellcats at the festival, which takes place at Kenilworth Racecourse on Human Rights Day, Thursday March 21. The Cure, will be headlining the festival.
Rock on the Lawns is a one-day celebration of rock ‘* ’ roll in all its forms – a day out on the lawns with beer gardens, gourmet food trucks with local and international musicians all sharing one stage.
The band is made up of Daniel Burger on bass, his brother, Sam, on piano and lead vocals and Robbie Spooner on drums. It was established in 2015.
Sam, from Rondebosch, has, however, been on the music scene for a while, with the YouTube channel he started when he was 16.
Robbie, from Pinelands, started playing the drums when he was eight and played at several gigs before joining the band.
“I’ve been lucky enough to travel to places I would never have been to because of music, and when not drumming for OTO you can sometimes find me behind the drum kit for Matthew Mole.”
Dan from Rondebosch, grew up in East London and started playing music in a jazz band before learning the bass and joining Opposite The Other.
On describing the band’s sound, Sam says: “Our music is introspective, dynamic and emotional.”
They have performed with artists such as Jimmy Nevis, Jeremy Loops, Beatenberg, Gangs of Ballet and Majozi.
Sam says opening for The Lumineers – performing in front of about 20 000 people over two nights – was a huge moment for the band.
“We’ve also been lucky enough to play a sold-out Kirstenbosch show with Beatenberg as well as open for Bastille and tour Europe with Matthew Mole,” he says.
