Lions Club members spread awareness at the Kenilworth Centre on Saturday about the early warning signs of childhood cancer.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the Lions handed out pamphlets from CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation and the Cansa Association of South Africa (Cansa) to shoppers.
“Most parents are not well aware of childhood cancer, and most cancer is curable if you catch it early enough,” said Gail Darling, from the Tokai Lions Club.
Lynette Muthuray, from CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation, thanked the Lions for their efforts.
Early warning signs of childhood cancer can include painful bones and joints; a lump; a change in appearance of the eye including a white spot, bulging or a squint; unexplained fever, weight loss, tiredness, bruising, pallor or bleeding; and changes in speech or walking as well as headaches or vomiting.
Visit choc.org.za, call 021 531 0052 or call the toll-free Cansa helpline at 0800 22 66 22 for more information.
