There have been three kidnapping-by-taxi cases along Main Road in the Rondebosch and Observatory areas in recent weeks, say police.
A case in Rondebosch on Tuesday August 29 was followed by two more in Observatory on Tuesday September 5 and Friday September 8.
In the Rondebosch incident, a taxi driver and his fee collector are alleged to have abducted a female passenger.
In all three incidents, the passengers reported being pushed onto the floor after their heads were covered with a cloth or bag. They’re then forced to call a next-of-kin and demand a ransom of R5000 to be deposited electronically for their release.
“The three women have since safely been released unharmed. Police are investigating the cases and are warning taxi commuters to avoid getting into minibus taxis that have no other passengers,” said Rondebosch police spokesman Warrant Officer Lyndon.
Rondebosch: Three suspects were arrested for kidnapping on Saturday 16th September for refusing to let three girls out of their vehicle after giving them a lift from Brooklyn to Cape Town.
The complainants claimed that they got a lift from the three suspects to Cape Town but notice that they were driving away from Cape Town towards Muizenberg.
They requested the driver to stop and let them out but he refused and kept on driving. They started to panic but managed to draw the attention of a Police sector vehicle and the vehicle were pulled over. The three suspect aged between 31 and 33 years old were arrested and detained at Rondebosch Police on charged for kidnapping. They appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate Court on Tuesday 19th September 2017.
