Margaret Phillips, of Rondebosch, has been working with two primary school boys to keep a local parking lot and its surroundings clean.
Ms Phillips – along with Sean Ford,13, and Liam Walter,13, who are from Rondebosch as well – has been keeping the parking lot on the corner of Chess Road and Milldene Avenue clean.
The lot is near a sports precinct and Keurboom Park, and many people pass the area.
Ms Phillips has been keeping the area clean since 2016, and the two boys joined her at the start of the year.
They pick up litter on Fridays and tend to the plants.
Ms Phillips said the boys worked hard and she was glad for the help. “I am most amused with their energy, input and ideas, and they learn a lot while they are working.”
Both Sean and Liam said they had learnt a lot about the different plants in the area, and Liam said the knowledge he had picked up had helped him score an A for a recent school project on plants.
Ms Philips said another municipal bin in the parking lot would reduce the amount of litter they had to pick up each week.
Ward councillor Sharon Cottle praised the trio for their community work. “We are always appreciative of initiatives of this nature,” she said.
Xanthea Limberg, mayoral committee member for water and waste, said three bins would be installed in the area. “This will be reviewed in summer when the area becomes busier, and, if necessary, more bins can be provided.”
