Join the storytelling festival at Central library

Hundreds of pupils from Grades 1 to 3 will join the Central library in the Company’s Garden, on Thursday April 21, for the library’s Storytelling Festival in celebration of World Book Day, which falls on Saturday April 23. Special guest Len Keating will entertain the pupils with his Xhosa and English puppet shows.

He will be joined by other storytellers.

Listening to stories helps children develop literacy skills and language, while stimulating their imagination.

This year’s World Book Day celebrations will also feature an edition of the popular Pulp Fiction Project in which books that would normally have gone for pulping are rescued.

The project is in its fourth year, and this year 20 000 romance novels will be distributed to libraries around the city.

As with previous editions of Pulp Fiction, avid readers and patrons are invited to take books away when the installations at the libraries reach their end. Several city libraries will offer special World Book Day events. For example, writer Niq Mhlongo will launch his new short story collection, Affluenza, after open mic sessions, at the Kuyasa library, in Khayelitsha, on Friday April 22, at 12.30pm, and at the Elsies River library on Saturday April 23.
