Ladles of Love founder Danny Diliberto will be climbing Table Mountain on Tuesday November 3 to raise funds.
With donor and volunteer fatigue he fears the sandwich operation of the not-for-profit will have to close with the approaching festive season.
Ladles of Love is offering people the chance to join Mr Diliberto for the climb on what is referred to as National Sandwich Day in America.
Ticket cost R550, which will feed 10 children a sandwich for a month, he said.
Sasko and Anchor Yeast have donated bread to make 50 000 sandwiches on the day.
This will be distributed to sandwich-making hubs where volunteers can join from 8.30am by booking a two-hour slot (or more) on Quicket.
Nazneen Karriem of Naazneen’s Soup Kitchen in Chapel Street, District 6, feeds 13 600 people each week with help from Ladles of Love, not only in her community but with women who have soup kitchens in Bonteheuwel, Milnerton and Plumstead. “We work seven days a week and will find a way to continue over the festive season. There are a lot of hungry people to be fed,” she said.
Steve Akester of Century City Athletics said their 450 members started feeding people from Brooklyn to Joe Slovo at the start of lockdown.
The club takes in youngsters from the Joe Slovo community and teaches them how to run.
Mr Akester said Ladles of Love provide them with sandwiches as well as veggies, rice and samp, which Slovo Kitchen make into soup in the kitchen at the old Ritz Hotel in Sea Point.
Ladles of Love has proved it can be done, said Mr Akester. “They’ve never let us down. They have a system that works but they need more support,” he said.
