People from all walks of life joined the family of slain anti-apartheid activist Imam Abdullah Haron to remember the day he was arrested in 1969. They were addressed at the Old Granary Building, in Buitenkant, on Tuesday May 28, and then walked across the road, to what is today called the Cape Town Central police station, formerly holding cells of Caledon Square, where the Imam was detained. The programme ended at the Castle of Good Hope, where slaves were hanged. The Imam died 123 days after being incarcerated on May 28, 50 years ago and the programme signifies his last days. Family and community members have formed the Imam A Haron Foundation, which will be hosting various events across the Mother City until September 27. They have also embarked on having the inquest into the Imam’s death reopened. For more information about events call coordinator Cassiem Khan on 076 640 7928.Â
