Woodstock police arrested a 56-year-old man for contravening the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Act, when he was found in possession and manufacturing of gambling machines.
On Tuesday March 1 at about 10.30am, members of Woodstock SAPS’ Crime Prevention Unit, in conjunction with officials from the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, had an integrated operation at one of the businesses at the Transwerke complex in Salt River.
Spokesperson for Woodstock police, Sergeant Hilton Malila, said during the execution of the search warrant, members discovered a warehouse containing various amusement machines. “A preliminary investigation, by the Gambling Board inspectors, revealed and identified gambling machines that were illegally on the premises. It was also discovered that the owner did not have a licence to be in possession or to manufacture gambling machines. We confiscated 27 illegal gambling machines on the premises,” Sergeant Malila said.
The estimated street value of the confiscations is around R405 000.
Police arrested the owner, who was alone on the premises at the time of the raid, who is facing multiple charges in contravention of the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Act.
Sergeant Malila said the suspect is in police custody and is due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday March 3.
