Southern suburbs pupils performed well in the Cape Town Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, earlier this month.
Katinka Wilkinson, of Herschel Girls’ High, scooped the Best Renewable Energy Award with “Investigation of Performance of Homemade Flywheel Energy Storage Systems”.
Katinka also earned a gold medal and the Eskom Best Energy Award.
Michael Wilson-Trollip and Hugo Janssens, from Bishops, with “Piezoelectric Transducer Tyres” won the HJ van der Bijl Award and gold medals.
“Comparing the Performance of Three Programming Language Types” by Derek Reissenzahn, of Bishops, won a gold.
Other top projects were “Cooling Down Buildings Using Plastic Water Bottles” by Junho Ko of Bishops and “Water Drip Sensor” by Julieth Lambert and Juliette Rademeyer, of Hershel.
Each year, Eskom Expo for Young Scientists enters outstanding and original scientific projects into international science fairs in America, China, Taiwan, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Nine Capetonian pupils will be interviewed to possibly represent South Africa overseas, including Tyla Goldman of Pinelands High and Junho Ko, Michael Wilson-Trollip and Hugo Janssens from Bishops.
