Thank you for your very good reporting of the difficulties those elderly people face (“headline”, Tatler, Date).
I’m writing as an ancient old lady who remembers the end of the war years – and visiting people on the top floor there 50 years ago.
It was a hot day, and seemed much more so, as there wasn’t much insulation between the ceiling and the roof. I can only imagine that still applies, and the upkeep is probably not of the best because of financial constraints. Is it remotely possible that something like a ‘Friends of Welverdiend’ could be formed? Perhaps some people would be willing to contribute to a scheme to pay for their security guard to be re-installed? That seems a huge worry for them. I’m too old to do much, but would contribute to that.
