Girl guides set a new Guinness World Record for the longest string of bottle caps, at the Old Mutual sports ground, in Pinelands, last Wednesday.
They strung together 121 600 bottle caps over 1.3km, beating the previous record of 117 040 bottle caps. The money raised by the recycled bottle caps used by the guides will go to Operation Smile, which funds reconstructive surgery for people with facial deformities who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford the procedure.
Lauren Bright, of Operation Smile, said the record attempt was a good way to raise public support and money for their efforts.
Tanya Prinsloo, the event co-ordinator and director of the girl guides Cape West region, thanked everyone for their support.
“We’re so proud of all of our girls, parents, grandparents, family and friends who all came together to help us achieve this incredible record.”
