Four suspects were arrested in Harfield Village late last Saturday afternoon after robbing a takeaway shop in Wynberg with a firearm.
According to a statement from Wynberg SAPS, the suspects tried to steal R15 000 in cash and cigarettes to the value of R5 000.
“Five men went inside the shop, one pointed to the shop owner with a firearm and demanded money. The owner shoved him and the suspect started beating him with the firearm on his head and in his face,”said Captain Ntomboxolo Nqunqeka from Wynberg SAPS.
Officers from Fidelity ADT played a big role in apprehending the suspects when they noticed that a blue Opel was speeding and was chased by another vehicle. They also joined the pursuit to try and catch the alleged suspects. This occurred after Fidelity ADT was responding to a call-out in Matthew Road at 3.15pm.
“When the suspects realised they were being followed by two Fidelity ADT officers they stopped their car and tried to flee on foot. The armed response officers managed to apprehend four suspects and returned them to where their car was abandoned along Rosmead Avenue,” said Jade Hanning, district manager for Fidelity ADT in Cape Town south.
According to Mr Hanning, when SAPS arrived on the scene, the vehicle of the alleged suspects was searched and a firearm was found underneath the seat.
According to Wynberg SAPS, the driver of the blue Opel is aged 49, while the other suspects are aged 21 and two are 17. The fifth suspect ran away.
Captain Nqunqeka said the suspects were charged with business robbery.
They appeared in court on Tuesday March 20 and were sent to Pollsmoor Prison. They will appear in court tomorrow, Friday March 23 for a bail application.
