Community Chest hosts donations drive-thru

Since its successful Mandela Day launch, Community Chest’s Donations Drive-Thru has grown and they have partnered with the Greater Retreat Community Action Network (CAN), to host a spring-themed Donations Drive-Thru at the Dutch Reformed Church in Constantia, on Saturday September 19.

People are asked to donate much-needed non-perishable foods, gardening tools, seedlings or money via SnapScan in support of community food gardens.

Greater Retreat CAN chairperson, Elrich Herman, explained: “Covid-19 has had devastating effects on most communities in our areas.

“We have 25 active food kitchens in the network that are struggling, as resources from donors slowly dry up. We needed more innovative ways to keep these kitchens going and partnering with Community Chest
is a great idea as they bring all their experience of service to communities to ensure suc-
cess.”

Founding member, Pastor Malcolm Campbell, added: “Donor support has all but dried up and we need to find creative ways to keep the pots cooking. Needs in communities remain great and, as a network, we cannot afford to stop serving.

“Resources raised via the Community Chest Donations Drive-Thru will be used to strengthen food security, including growing our own fresh produce.”

Community Chest spokesperson, Desiré Goliath, said they had seen the impact of community driven support networks and applauded the work they did.

All donations will be delivered to beneficiaries in the areas in which Greater Retreat CAN operates.

Join in and give on Saturday September 19, from 11am to 1pm at the Dutch Reformed Church, Firgrove Way, Constantia.
