The second Cape Town Concert Series season opens on Saturday August 20 at the Baxter Concert Hall with a recital by violinist Madeline Adkins and pianist Luis Magalhães, at 8pm.
The concert will feature two sonatas by Mendelssohn (in F major and minor) and the Sonata no 1 by Prokofiev.
Both musicians are equally at home as soloists and in chamber music and this concert celebrates the release their CD of Mendelssohn Sonatas on the TwoPianists label.
Ms Adkins, who joins the Utah Symphony as concertmaster later this year, had been Associate Concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2005 and has been concertmaster of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra since 2008. She performs on a 1753 Guadagnini violin loaned to her by conductor, Marin Alsop.
Mr Magalhães has played extensively across Europe with engagements in Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, his native Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, France and Italy, among others. Beyond Europe, he has appeared on stages in Brazil, South Africa, China, Japan, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and on numerous occasions, the United States. He is a Yamaha International Artist.
Subscriptions are available at R600 for the four-concert series, which includes a celebrity fund-raising recital with pianists David Nettle and Richard Markham on Saturday November 12.
