■ The annual Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival, which celebrates 19 years at the Baxter Concert Hall this year, will showcase 23 school, university and community big bands at the four-day festival. Funds raised are used to support music initiatives in the disadvantaged communities. Today, Thursday June 1, you can listen to music by the Uni-sound big band (combined musicians from Groote Schuur High School and St Joseph’s College), Morejazz big band (from Mozambique), Westerford High School big band, Delft Big Band, Wynberg Boys’ High School jazz band, and Stellenbosch youth jazz band. On the bill tomorrow, Friday June 2, are the Little Giants, Bergvliet High School big band, Heathfield High’s jazz band, Beau Soleil music centre; Wynberg Girls’ High School’s big band and the UCT Big Band; and on Saturday June 3, SACS Junior School jazz band, the Sans Souci Jazz Cats, SACS High’s senior jazz band and the Alumni Big Band will be on stage.
