A massive fire which broke out in the vicinity of Access Park, Kenilworth, on Wednesday is under control.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Services was alerted to smoke coming from the vicinity of the shopping complex around 11.30pm yesterday, Wednesday October 26.
The City’s Fire and Rescue spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, says a total of 10 firefighting appliances and crews from various fire stations attended to the scene where the buildings in Myhof Road housing the Home Department Centre store, CAB Foods and the Alliance Motor Group dealership and workshop had been affected by the fire.
“The cause is unknown; a fire safety inspector is on scene to determine the likely cause of the fire,” Mr Carelse says.
Claremont police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Marnus Fourie, says police reported to the scene at around 11.30pm and saw the fire department putting out the flames. “ At the current time there is still no known cause for the fire,” he says.
He says the fire department has not completed their assessment of the scene.
Mr Carelse says the blaze was brought under control just before 5am today. “ Crews are still at the site to attend to minor flare-ups and a structural engineer and a fire safety inspector have been called to the scene,” he says.
He says two firefighters experienced minor injuries while fighting the fire.
