Answering questions for funds

Islamic Relief South Africa is hosting a quiz night to raise funds for its annual back-to-school programme, which will give over 600 families stationery and school uniforms for the new school year.

The quiz will take place on Saturday November 4 at the Islamic Relief offices in Imam Haron Road, Lansdowne, at 7.30pm.

Rezaa Kasu, head of fund development and communications at Islamic Relief, said many of the families it supported were child-headed and relied on donations from the community.

The organisation supports more than 2000 children nationally, including over 160 children in Cape Town, with stationery packs and uniforms. This costs about R1 million.

“The basic cost of stationery and uniforms is too expensive, especially for more than one child in a household,” said Mr Kasu.

The quiz will be based on general knowledge questions and will be made up of 10 rounds and 30 teams with five people each. The theme fis television characters. Anyone older than 12 can enter.

“It is a very novel idea. People love to dress up. We have practised it with our staff and they thoroughly enjoyed it. With the quiz, we are able to educate people about orphans in South Africa,” Mr Kasu said.
