* Kyle Cato, 15, right, of the 3rd Pinelands Scout Troop, recently became the first South African recipient of the prestigious Messenger of Peace badge, and shared the occasion with fellow scout Melissa Rijs, left. The Messengers of Peace programme was formally launched in September 2011 in Saudi Arabia by King Abdullah and Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. King Abdullah called on all scouts the world over to be “Messengers for Peace”. Since then Scouts South Africa has been encouraging its members to initiate service projects within their communities. Kyle, a Grade 9 pupil at Michael Oak Waldorf School in Kenilworth, has been running his Bottle Tops for Wheelchairs project since last year and by April this year had collected more than 2 000kg of bottle tops. He is starting a new bottle top project, this time with Operation Smile, which helps provide surgery for children born with cleft palates, as the beneficiary.
