Three Tatler readers can each win a DVD of the film, Sarafina!, sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Starring Leleti Khumalo, Whoopi Goldberg, John Kani and the late Miriam Makeba, the film was written by Mbongeni Ngema, produced by Anant Singh, directed by Darrell Roodt and the music composed by Hugh Masekela and Mbongeni Ngema. The plot centres on the involvement of students in the Soweto student uprisings of 1976 in opposition to the implementation of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. It is also about the political awakening of a young Soweto girl, Sarafina (Khumalo), pictured in the middle. Released on September 18 1992, Sarafina! was re-released in South Africa on 16 June 2006 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Soweto uprising. This year, to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1976 uprisings, selected Ster Kinekor cinemas have free screenings of Sarafina! on Youth Day, June 16.
