Sun International chief operating officer Rob Collins announced that the company will be the new sponsor for the prestigious horse racing event, the Met, after J&B pulled out earlier this year.
J&B sponsored the Met for the past 39 years. The announcement was made on Wednesday September 28 at the Table Bay Hotel at the Waterfront.
The event was attended by Mayor Patricia de Lille, musicians including Jimmy Nevis and business people. Mr Collins said: “Given the gaming and social history of the Met, the synergy with Sun International was immediately clear. We are delighted and honoured to be associated with the Met.”
He said that for more than 30 years, Sun International has provided South Africans with bold, large scale events such as Miss South Africa pageants and the Nedbank Golf challenge, among others.
“This expertise bodes well for the future of the Sun Met, as it will now be named.
A bottle of GH Mumm champagne was popped and served in celebration of the partnership. Mumm is the newest presenting sponsor of the Met. Investec also came on board as a secondary sponsor.
Enquiries from the CapeTowner as to why J&B Enterprises had pulled out as sponsors of the event went unanswered by the time of print.
However, in previous reports, Diago SA, which is the local distributor of J&B Whiskey, said that J&B had decided to end the partnership and allocate resources to other brand initiatives.
