The four-day Community Chest Carnival has been revamped with gourmet food trucks, craft beers and wine tasting to satisfy the taste buds of the Mother City’s ever-growing community of foodies.
The fun festival, attracting in excess of 80 000 people, will take place a little later than usual this year – from Wednesday March 30 to Saturday April 2, at the traditional venue of Maynardville Park in Wynberg.
And it’s all to raise funds for the Community Chest of the Western Cape, which provides support to more than 200 community organisations throughout the province.
“This year we’ve taken heed of all the feedback from previous events and we are bringing back the nostalgia people so fondly remember from the golden years of the carnival,” says Jo Pereira, head of strategy and sustainability for the Community Chest of the Western Cape. “But we also want to celebrate the future of the carnival, with all the new elements we believe our regular event goers will grow to love for many more years to come.”
The Community Chest Carnival is one of the Mother City’s longest running and most successful family events.
It began in 1951 as a theatrical garden party, and has evolved into a festival of international food, local entertainment and family fun. At this year’s carnival there will be more seating and more parking.
Tickets are available at the entrance of the carnival at R50 for adults, and R30 for children under the age of 18. But pensioners will receive complimentary access throughout the event.
Gates open from 4pm to 11pm, from Wednesday to Friday, and from 10am to 11pm on Saturday.
