Classical music at City Hall

Christina Brabetz is First Concertmaster of the Komische Oper in Berlin.

Christina Brabetz has returned to Cape Town to perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday April 20 at the Cape Town City Hall, at 7.30pm.

Principal guest conductor Bernhard Gueller will be on the podium and the pre-concert talk by Albert Combrink will begin at 6.45pm. This is the second concert in the current Autumn Symphonies season at the City Hall.

Gueller will also conduct the 10th Symphony in E minor by Shostakovich, made possible by a generous donation from a supporter and concert-goer in memory of her late husband. It has enabled the orchestral forces to be augmented to 75, the largest force in recent years. This symphony, regarded by many as Shostakovich’s finest, is a musical depiction of the Stalin regime in Russia and, in his own words, the second movement is a portrait of the dictator.

The concert opens with Kikimora, Liadov’s tone poem based on a Russian legend.

Tickets for this concert are available at Computicket or Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7895.

Dress rehearsal tickets for the 11am rehearsal on the day are through Quicket.
