Cape Town’s Bollywood dance troupe, Taare, promise to take viewers on a vibrant journey in an online show, The Taare Express, available for streaming from Friday November 12 at 8pm to Sunday November 14.
Taare’s previous productions include Dance through Bollywood, Rhythm India, Rivers of Emotion, Live Love Bollywood, Bollywood Enchanted and Beats of Bollywood.
Filmed at the Artscape theatre, the 90-minute show will take viewers from the south to the north of India, through the musical decades, and across an array of dance styles from traditional to contemporary.
The production features dancers from Dance for All and Latin Fever with flavours of Contemporary, African and Latin dance styles.
Ahneesh Valodia, founder of Taare, says the Covid-19 pandemic has drastically changed the way performing arts are staged and viewed.
“After not presenting a production in 2020, we could not let another year pass without a new artistic endeavour. The entire production was choreographed and rehearsed on Zoom with face-to-face rehearsals beginning only four weeks before filming.
“With dance being something so practical and technical, and compounded with internet lags and connectivity issues, the task of covering all content on Zoom was particularly challenging. However, we are fortunate to have a dedicated and committed team who persevered and they have created something so incredibly beautiful.
“I am particularly excited that this is an opportunity for us to share our work with a greater audience – we are able to reach people and homes who may not have been able to see us live in the theatre. I am also equally excited to share the details of Indian dance – the beauty and splendour – often lost when watching dance from a distance in a live audience.”
Tickets, at R150 each, are available on Quicket.
